Oklahoma City Police Department
The Oklahoma City Police Department
received their first six motorcycles (Harley Indians) in 1912 and the unit has been in continuous service since then.
Equipped with Kawasaki 1000 motorcycles in the 1990s, the unit has come full circle with the return to Harley motorcycles
in early 2000. The unit has fourteen officers supervised by two Lieutenants. All are volunteers and must pass
a rigorous training course with periodic re-qualification. Their primary duty is aggressive traffic enforcement to reduce
accidents. As a result, they account for one third of all traffic citations annually. Motor Officers
also assist in accident investigations, traffic control at major accident scenes, disasters and special events; conduct escorts
for funerals and visiting dignitaries. Unit members are also Certified Radar Operators and experts in traffic laws.
