Sierra Vista Police Department Motor Unit History

The Sierra Vista Police Department began its first 'motor unit' in 1976 with the help of a grant through the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.

The funding from the grant allowed the purchase of two Moto Guzzis which were operated until early 1980.

The department was without Motors or a traffic unit until August 2005, when a traffic unit was envisioned with the assistance of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety. Two officers were sent to Chicago to participate in the Northwestern University Police Motorcycle Training program.

As a result of the training and funding, the department purchased a 2006 Harley Davidson Electra Glide and in September 2005 began patrolling the streets of Sierra Vista. Shortly afterwards, a 2005 BMW was granted to the department allowing two motor officers full time traffic enforcement duties.

Sierra Vista Police Department currently has two certified motor officers assigned to duty.
