Universal Combat Shirt (UCS)
By
Massif
 THE LOOK
The look is low profile operations shirt, with armor it looks as your uniform.  Shirt is awesome in the fact that the shirt can look casual and professional at different times and still provided a level of safety to the officer.
THE COMFORT
The comfort is great.  In the heat it cools the shirt breaths and keeps you cool. When you move from the heat to an A/C room you do not freeze.  It is a very nice balance.  The comfort while riding is great there is no pulling or tugging of the shirt on the motorcycle during low speed drills.  It is also the same for being loaded down with equipment.
FUNCTIONALITY
The functionality of the shirt, this shirt is Flame Resistant.  It is heavier in weight do to the FR.  The UCS is still an outstanding shirt.  Fist, the feel, while riding the motorcycle the UCS was comfortable in the 90 degree heat.  The UCS was a little warm but it wicked away my sweat and kept me cool.  For motor officers it is great because you have the ability of looking professional and maintain the safety of a long sleeve shirt without the heat problems.  I found the sleeve pockets large enough to keep a note pad and cell phone without being too cumbersome.  The Universal Combat shirt did not rub, bunch, chaff, or pinch during wear.  It was very comfortable.  I wore a full tactical vest that is not normally worn for Law Enforcement.  I used it to see how the shirt would react to the extra weight and heavy gear.   The UCS did better than other under the armor clothing.  During the low speed motorcycle maneuverability the shirt performed better than I expected.  There was no tugging pulling or pinching while maneuvering the motorcycle.  It was the same with the gear.  I was able to pull up, drop the motor, dismount and handle the firearm without any shirt issues.  The Velcro adjustable sleeves kept the shirt from moving around and ensured a great fit.  During the day of testing it was 95 degrees.  You can see the sweat in some of the photos but if you look I am not overheated.  The shirt was able to breathe allowing me to stay cool.Massif has another shirt it is the Lightweight Tactical Shirt.  I believe that shirt would be better for departments in hotter areas.I did not get an opportunity to test the FR but it during the range time I did get a little too close to the pipes and I did not get buried.  I think that is a plus.
ORDERING
The Lightweight Tactical Shirts come in Black and OD and are $89.99.  The Universal Combat Shirt which is Flame Resistant is more expensive.  You can order from:

OVERALL
Overall I feel this shirt is great for LE work for several reasons.  First, The low profile professional look.  Second, the functionality and safety of the shirt.  And last, the comfort.  I will be back to get some more of the shirts.  The performance of the UCS is better than others in its field.  Awesome job Massif!!

Second Face On
THE LOOK
The Second Face On Goggles have a neutral look and a little intimidating.  Can be customized with different paint patterns.
THE COMFORT
The Second Face On Goggles are great for people that wear Prescription glass.  I did a 60 mile ride with it on.  The comfort level was great.  It did not push on the glasses so there was no pressure on the face from the glasses.  At highway speeds the Gladiator was stable and did not move from the wind and the wake of passing trucks did not affect it at all.  It was a 90 degree day and my face was cool.  It was easy to breathe in as well as a cool breeze from the vents made the ride that more enjoyable.
FUNCTIONALITY
The functionality of the Gladiator is outstanding.  While on the ride I came up to a gravel truck.  Some gravel fell off the truck.  It hit my helmet and a couple hit the lens.  I heard it but did not feel anything.  When it rains it is like wearing Rain-X.  The rain shoots off the lens.  There was no dotting or any disturbing vision impairment. The down side to the Gladiator is the limit of peripheral vision.  It does take some getting used to.  After a while I notice I looking through the holes in the vents to see my speedometer.  You have to look to the sides to get a good view of what is next to you.  If you have never worn anything like this before it will take time to become comfortable in them.  Second Face On is in the process of a make a version that is much wider and increases the view of the goggles. The lenses are guaranteed for life.  So it stands to reason they are behind their product.  After what I have seen they have a great product for long distance and bike rally riders.  Short hopes to the store not so much unless it is raining then you will enjoy the ride.  I found that my face was relaxed the whole ride.  I know this sounds funny but I was not squinting my eyes from the wind or tighten my face from the small pieces of road debt.  It was something I never thought about before and it makes the ride that much better.

You can order through their online store at:  http://www.secondfaceon.com

The Active Winter Rider Boot by Mountain Horse

THE LOOK

The Active Winter Rider boot has a nice professional look to it. The material shines up fairly easily.

THE COMFORT

The boots are extremely comfortable. The boot is lightweight so there is no problem with long periods of use. Though not a running boot, it still did very well. The boot can handle the day-to-day tasks of patrol. At the end of a 12-hour day, my feet were not screaming to get out. In fact I could have gone longer in them!

FUNCTIONALITY

The functionality of the Active Winter Rider Boot is that they can be worn every day. The sole has great grip on oily roads and surfaces. It is waterproof — riding in the rain and in cold weather, your feet stay dry and warm. The fur lining adds extra protection in the cold. I did not test the extreme temperatures that this boot can handle, but they did keep me warm and dry in colder temperatures.

A great feature that this boot has is the two reflective strips on the back of the heel. This is a nice safety feature for night and bad-weather riding.

The zippers are improved with elastic panels for better fit and use.

Due to the light weight of the boots, I did not have trouble running in them — I was able to dismount and run with ease.

I can say that, for you motor officers and Mounted Officers, these boots are durable. While testing, I was able to clear a mechanical malfunction with the top of the boots.

Also, I did not feel as much of the vibration of the motorcycle as I have felt wearing other boots. The heat from the motor does not seem to affect the boots, and they provide protection against road debris. I can say that Mountain Horse builds a very durable boot. The construction can take a beating. I was wearing the Rimfrost Boot and laid the motor down at 55 MPH. Those boots took the brunt of the fall and, as for my legs, not a scratch!

OVERALL

Overall, The Active Winter Rider boot is a great seasonal patrol boot. Its light weight durable construction, functionality, and price make it the best seasonal choice in boots for patrol officers.

The "Hodge Mount" is great for making your Motor Officers more effective.

The “Hodge” is designed to secure the Colt M4 Commando, AR15 with 11 ½ inch barrel

and the Hecklor Kosh G36 in either a Progard or Santa Cruz lock around the forward grip,

similar to what is used in the squad cars. The lock is located precisely at the correct

angle and position on the rifle. The butt of the rifle fits precisely in the correct position

for the lid to close tightly. The patented design of the “Hodge” secures the weapon

safely. Photo below shown with the Progard lock.

The mount is installed in the saddlebag of the Harley Davidson motorcycles.  Remove the bolt that holds the saddlebag on and place the mount on, then reattach the saddlebag and you can carry your M4 on your motor.  You can carry extra magazines between the mount and the saddlebag wall.  This will help you to optimize your space. The Palm Beach County, FL Sheriff's Office is using the system, and from what I have been told, there is no uneven weight issues.  Rain equipment or citation books can be packed around the weapon without obstructing it if needed.

The mount can help the department to utilize it Motor Unit to it maximum capacity.  Motors have had the advantage over the cruiser, now your SWAT Team can get it where it is impossible to get to by car.

For April we have Laser Tech's Ulrtalyte 200 LR Laser Speed Gun.

This was one I wanted to pass along. I was talking with some Motor Officers and they were raving about the UltraLyte 200 LR.  First, the batteries are 2 C Batteries.  This makes it easy to get batteries and chage them out.  Second, I was told that the Batteries will last for a month before changing.  Third, the lite weight of the unit makes it easier to hold and manage.  When you pull the trigger you get the reading right away, no waiting.  You can also target the 3rd car in the right line of traffic.  You can select the car you want.

They could not stop talking about the unit.  It is something you just have to try.  Call Laser Tech for a demo.

The Emerson "Commander" Knife

The Emerson Commander Knife

THE LOOK

The Emerson Commander knife as a no non-sense look to it. It says you mean business with that professional look.

 THE COMFORT

The Commander fits and feels great in the hand. It also fits great in your motor boot. It does not dig or bit into the leg.

FUNCTIONALITY

The functionality of the Emerson Commander is very user friendly. Emerson designed and made this knife a real combat knife. Built to handle extreme environments, this knife is used by The Navy SEALs and Special Operation Units in the Military. This knife has a shape blade with or without serrations that can cut seat belt and anything that you will run into on the street. This blade can handle anything you can throw at it.  The Patented "wave" shaped opening feature allows you to open your knife right from your boot.  If you grab your knife and turn it slitly as you pull it out the "wave" will catch on the end of your boot and will deploy.  The knife in the photo is 5 years old and it stills works like new.  It has been in water fresh and salt water, sand, dirt, on the road, and has cut things you would not try with an expensive knife. The Commander has an inner locking mechanism so the blade will not accidentally close on you.  The knife can be opened and closed with one hand.  It is a must tool to have on your belt, or boot.  The knife Specs are below:

Handles
Black or Green G-10 epoxy / glass laminate
Lock
Aerospace grade Titanium

Setcom Liberator™ Wireless Mobile-Portable system was released in Fall 2009.   Continuing to set the standard in police motorcycle wireless communications systems, the Liberator 9 system eliminates the cable between the rider and the motorcycle. It seamlessly allows for rapid transition from using the mobile radio while on the motorcycle to using the portable radio while off the motorcycle.
  • Extremely Long Battery Life - Setcom's system has talk time of up to 40 hours which easily accommodates extended shifts. Moreover, if the user accidently forgets to charge the SuperMic after a shift, he is not down the next day because of a depleted battery.
  • No Syncing or Pairing - Just walk up to any motorcycle equipped with the Liberator 9 system and sit down. The Liberator 9 system automatically links with the wireless SuperMic without pushing any buttons. Switching motorcycles is as easy as walking over to another bike.
  • No Radio Interference - Setcom's system uses Near Field Magnetic Induction (NFMI) which is a low power, low frequency technology designed primarily for military use. Because it uses magnetic induction, the technology is virtually immune to radio frequency (RF) interference.
  • Personal Area Network (PAN) - The NFMI technology creates a highly secure communication "bubble" for the Liberator 9 user. The bubble allows for dedicated communication channels, no bandwidth sharing requirements, complete frequency re-use between bubbles, reliable coexistence with WiFi, CDMA, TDMA. and GSM, and very substantial savings in power.
  • Ultra High Security - The system uses both encryption and the PAN to create a nearly impenetrable security system. Because of the tight range of the PAN, someone would have to almost hug the officer to be able to intercept communications and then they would have to decrypt the transmissions.
  • No Interference between Multiple Motorcycles - The Liberator 9's Personal Area Network allows for officers to ride side-by-side and tire-to-tire without interference. Theoretically, an infinite number of bikes could ride together without issue.
  • No RF Signature - Because Setcom uses NFMI there is no RF signature that criminals can detect. An officer can clandestinely approach a situation without any radio presence being sensed.
  • Technology Developed for Military Use - Given the ultra secure and low power features of the system and the fact that there is no RF signature by the NFMI technology, the United States military has a number of classified applications of the technology in development.
  • No Cable between SuperMic and Portable Radio - No physical connection exists between the SuperMic and portable radio. SuperMic is completely wireless when disconnected from the helmet.
  • Backward Compatible with Current Setcom Helmet Kits - No reason to buy a helmet kit if you are already riding with Setcom.
  • No Locking / Indexed Connectors - Setcom's SuperMic to helmet connection is with a Nexus connector which pulls apart with a solid tug.
  • Designed to Withstand the Elements - Handlebar enclosure and PTT switch are fully waterproof (IP-X8). SuperMic is weatherproof (IP-X3).

Safety features:
1. Handlebar Transceiver Box:
a. The box is made of high impact ABS plastic which is UV resistant and waterproof (IP-X8). Measuring only 2.25"X1.5"X2.5", the transceiver is space conscious and designed to be securely fastened to the handlebar. If a bike goes down, it's not a high point of impact.
b. The placement of the transceiver is important. Since we use NFMI technology, which was developed for military use, because of its secure frequency, this requires the transmitter box to sit on the handlebar (our Liberator Wireless Portable-Only product can be placed in other areas if needed by the officer but is mainly installed on the handlebar as well).
2. SuperMic
a. The shoulder mic has up to 40 hours of talk time instead of the typical 12, a much safer option for officers who can't always charge their gear. Now a motor officer can ride for a very long period time and over multiple days without having to worry about losing connection and/or communication.
b. The microphone is rated up to 100 mph.

After a 55 MPH Lay Down

On July 11, 2008 on a ride to the Florida Keys.  I caught a groove in the road just south of Alabama Jacks.  The groove guided me off the road andI found the 6 inch lip off the road.  I could not get back on the road and when I applied my back brake and the rear end slide out from under me.  I stayed on the bike sliding backwards when it high-sided me off.  I blacked out from the impact of the road.  I got up and walked away with a hair line fracture on my left shoulder blade and some road rash.  The helmet saved me.  The protective gear did it's job.  I had no injuries below the waist because of the Boots I was wearing.  This is another of so many stories of protective gear saving lives.  Great Job Max Pro Police & Armor.  I have talked with the company and the company cares for their customers.  Thank you again Max Pro Police & Armor.

Steve,

It was great to talk to you yesterday. I showed the people in production the pictures you sent and relayed the message that you had given me when we spoke yesterday. In all honesty, there were tears in a couple of their eyes. It is nice to be able to show them that what they do is of great service to someone. All too often, you only hear what is wrong with the product so I am thankful to you for the message you gave. I hope you have a quick recovery and if you need anything please let me know.

Best wishes,

The Max Pro Police & Armor SD-600V Helmet

THE LOOK

The Max Pro Police SD-600V Helmet has a very Professional look; The SD-600V that I tested is Gold in color with a black High Rise.

 THE COMFORT

The SD-600V is light weight and comfortable to wear. The straps do not put or are not uncomfortable. The visor is a perfect; it blocks the sun without having to tilt your head down and is the right tint as not to block your vision.

FUNCTIONALITY

The functionality of the SD-600V is wonderful.  The first thing you notice is the weight. The SD-600V is light weight so you do not have the discomfort of prolonged use on you neck. The straps are comfortable and very functional. The back strap that runs on the back of the head is not noticed during the ride, but does its job in high winds or at high speeds. It keeps the helmet in place and does not move around on your head. The SD-600V model has vents. The vents can be opened and closed with very little effort and allows air into the top of the helmet and helps to keep your head cool. During hard rain and strong wind, the helmet stayed securely on my head no moving or sliding around and the visor was just enough to protect me from the rain. The lining on the inside of the helmet is great, you can get a removable line for washing and the harness system is fully adjustable. The chin strap as a quick disconnect system for easy on and off ability. The back of the head strap is adjustable with Velcro for a snug fit.

The SD-600V is DOT approved. The SD-600V as well as the other helmets by Max Pro comes with options. Options like ear and neck protection, visors and colors, helmet stickers or medal badges. You can build your own custom helmet.

THE PRICE

The SD-600Vcan comes in standard Black and White or in custom colors to fit you or your Department’s uniform. The price starts at $143.00

The Ride Like A Pro Video Series

Ride Like A Pro V

Photo provided by Ride Like A Pro

In the last couple of months I have had a lot of questions about training for civilian and for Motor Officers, so I thought I would pass on this great training video series, “Ride Like A Pro”. “The Ride Like A Pro” videos are great for first time riders to experienced and seasoned riders.

The “Learn To Ride The Easy Way” is a video for the first time rider. This step by step video takes you to starting the motorcycle, to riding and turning the motorcycle. This video is great for refreshing rusty riding skills and for prep for the Rider-Edge course.

The “Ride Like A Pro V” is for the experienced rider. I recommend this video for riders that have just passed the Rider-Edge Course. This video gives you in depth instruction on techniques used by Police Motor Officers across the country.  Put your self in the top 2% of riders. This video will help you master your motorcycle. The exercises on the video will test and push you and your motorcycle to the limits. With practice this video can improve your riding skills. I have this video and it improved by riding level so much that I have only been riding for one year and I am now practicing in the same dimensions as the Motor Officers train in.

I have passed this video on to a friend of mine who had been riding for 20 years and I told him if he does not learn something from it I will buy him dinner. He gave it back to me the next day and he told me that he ordered the video and that I was right, it was the best training tool he could get.

To help your training, Ride Like A Pro is also in book form. So you can take it with you while you practice. If you practice by yourself or with a friend or in a group, The book can help your range and practice time.

The Video Series also has “A Look at Police Motorcycle Rodeos” This video shows you a police rodeo. A look at the riding patterns, the skill level of Police Motor Officers.  Great if you have never seen one.  Will help if you want to push yourself harder.

I spoke with the "Motorman" and he wanted me to pass on to the Motor Officers on the 2009 HDs.  If you take a trumble to the Fork Stops and grind them down you can get a better turn radius then the older HDs.  Jerry "The MotorMan" turned an 2009 Ultra in 15 1/2 Feet.  This can improve your turning capabilities.

April 2009 Equipment Review is on the Frontline Motor Breeches by Intapol Industries.

Frontline Motor Breeches from Intapol Industries

THE LOOK

I ride everyday rain or shine.  I have the Frontline 100% Polyester breeches from Intapol Industries.  The look is great and the feel is better.  I have two pairs of the Navy Blue breeches and I wear them as much as I can they give you a professional look with comfort.

 THE COMFORT

The breeches is more then comfortable to wear, Most of you like me live in them.  These breeches are wonderful.  I get a little ride up after long hours in the seat but nothing too uncomfortable.  They are great for nice sunny days and not bad for the rainy ones.  The material does not irritate my skin wet or dry.

THE FUNCTIONALITY

The functionality of the Breeches is great.  On hot Florida days the pants do not burn my legs in the sun and still manages to breath very well.  I have found that during Florida sun showers the breeches dry quickly and do not make you feel like a water logged dog.  During heavy rain water will soak through but the moving air over your legs helps dry them out fairly quickly.  The seat is reinforced as well as the knees.  There has been no signs of distress or wearing in the seat, knees, and inner legs.  They are holding up very well under the use and abuse on them.  I like the fact that the pants do not interferer when I zip up my boots.  My legs were not sweating in my boots and feel very comfortable riding all day.

THE PRICE

The Frontline Breeches from Intapol Industries are $79.99

March 2009 Equipment on review is the ESS Advancer V-12 Goggles by ESS, Eye Safety Systems, Inc.

ESS, Eye Safety Systems, Inc.

Advancer V-12

THE LOOK

The black and gray color frame and lenses give it a nice low profile look.

 THE COMFORT

The ESS Advancer V-12 Goggles is comfortable to wear.  It does not suck your eyes out like some goggles.  I liked the feel, and the easy open and close vents were great for varying road conditions.  I wore the goggles on my head with the helmet on over the strap for the best fit and feel.  I did not have any pressure or pain from the adjustable strap on my head.

THE FUNCTIONALITY

The functionality of the ESS Advancer V-12 was great.  The features that the goggles have are awesome.  First, they have vents, you can open and close.  To open the vents you pull the lens from the frame and to close them you push the lens to the frame.  Second, removable lenses, you can change from Smoke to Clear or High Def Yellow.  With the goggles to get a Lens Pod this is a small portable case to store the lenses when not in use.  On the Advancer V-12 is a Speedsleeve.  this is a sleeve that protects the goggles when not is use and when ready to wear it can be slid around the adjustable band, great for people like me that loose things.  The speedsleeve is also Anti-Reflective so you tactical guys out there can use them on operations after you get off your motor.  ESS has a hard zipper case or a Molle soft case.  The Advancer V-12 can have RX inserts

I wore the V-12s on the interstate for about 4 or 5 hours.  I have to say they provided me protection against dirt, dust, smoke and the small bits of road debris that you encounter on the highway.  The vent system made it easy for me to open and close them for the road conditions.  I did not find any restrictions as far as comfort and blind spots.  The rubber seal will be a little sweaty in the heat but open the vents and it helps to cool off.  For you guys that wear RX glasses, ESS has RX inserts available for the Advancer V-12.

Some of the features of the Advancer V-12 are:

  1. They are US Mil Spec Goggles
  2. Lens Coated with ESS Clear Zone anti-fog and anti-scratch coating
  3. Lenses: 2.8mm High Impact Polycarbonate-Interchangeable - 100% UVA/UVBN protection and come with a Lens Pod to protect the lenses when not in use.
  4. Prescription insert.

THE PRICE

The ESS Advancer V-12 has two combinations you can buy.

  1. 2 Lens Version, with a zipper hard case with Clear and Smoke Lenses, Speedsleeve and Lens Pod for $115.00

It's November and we will be covering a great and inexpensive Christmas gift for you.  It is called Pro-Guard, it protects your crash bars from tip overs and other crashes.  I got a pair a few days ago.  They are awesome.
THE INSTALLATION
Pro Guards is made of a semi flexible plastic.  When you start a side and push onto the bars it snaps into place.  It took me just a few seconds to install them on my front crash bars. Great for training, competitions pop on and off in seconds.
THE LOOK
After the installation I took my motor out on the freeway for about 50 miles and took a look at them after the ride.  They did not move, shift, chafe, or pop off.  The Pro Guards looked like they were made for my bike.
THE PERFORMANCE
I took my motor out and did a lot of slow speed circles, Figure-Eights and U-Turns.     At low speed tip overs the Pro Guards did their job and stayed on the bars, they did not move slide or have to be readjusted.  I did find that depending on the texture of the road, speed and angle you crash they will pop off.  You can use flex-ties to keep them from popping off.
THE PROTECTION
The protection they provide is great.  They will not stay together or protect to much in a high speed crash but for practice, required training, and for you new riders for learning, They are the best.  For the Department Sgt., LTs, and Administration, if your department leases it's motors, the Pro Guards will cut down on replacement on turn - ins. I found out it is $250.00 for the Front crash bar and $150.00 for the saddlebag bars.  The department has to pay to replace them on your turn-in.
THE PRICE

Pro Guards for the Front Crash Bar is $19.95.  For a Front and Back set it is $29.99.  I think for the price you are getting you moneys worth.  Also you can keep them on or just put them on during training and competitions.  It will protect the departments investment as well as your own.  You do the math.
To order your pair go to www.proguards.net
They are great stocking stuffers!!

This month in October I will be covering the Mountain Horse Rimfrost Boots for the winter months coming.

webassets/rimfrostrider.jpg

I bought mine 6 months ago from Squad Fitters, Inc.  I ride everyday in South Florida.  In the heat and in the rain.  I love the boots, I have found that they provide some comfort from the engine heat and in the rain that boot is definitely waterproof!  I found that if you wear a good pair of wick-away socks like from Underarmor your feet do not sweat that badly.  The Rimfrost Boots are comfortable for patrolling and walking around in.  I also like the material that the boots are made of, I was hit by a piece of road debris.  It struck my shine and bounced off, will very little pain to my leg.   The soles are great.  I was at a light and there was some oil on the road.  I was cautious about placing my foot down but the boots grabbed the road and I had excellent footing in the oil, a fellow rider was not so lucky, he slipped in the oil and I had to help him to get his bike upright.
I like the safety feature as well.  There is a reflective strip across the Velcro closer for added visibility at night.  I think the boots are great.

What other users have to say about the Rimfrost Boots.

Have had my pair going on about 5 years now.  Purchased from Squad Fitters.  Good for 40 degrees or below.  I have to watch the weather, if it's going to be above 40 during the day my feet start to sweat.  So, I just use them for the really cold days.  In our unit, we ride year round (central Connecticut) as long as the roads are clear.  Rode for the Mayors inauguration one year it was 11 degrees.  Wasn't fun.
