Lee County, FL Sheriff's Office Motor Unit

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office currently has seven motor officers assigned to the Traffic Unit. They are comprised of one sergeant and six deputies. The Traffic Unit has a total of 23 deputies assigned to it. The motor units work weekdays which consist of Monday thru Thursday or Tuesday thru Friday. L.C.S.O.’s first motor units were in 1973 and consisted of four deputies. Over the years the size of the motor unit has varied, based on the needs of the sheriff’s office. Motors at one time were strictly patrol deputies, who answered calls for service that just happened to be riding motorcycles. Motors have transitioned to primarily being used for traffic enforcement and respond to crashes when needed. Motors also augment the patrol units when calls for service become excessive. Motors also work numerous parade functions; provide dignitary escorts and many other public functions. The deputies assigned to motors must successfully graduate from the two week motorcycle operator’s course and undergo quarterly training to maintain their certification.
